“The wood turner in me lay sleeping from when I left school until about 2015 when I could see the potential for an engaging hobby involving wood in some way. I have always enjoyed working with interesting woods of many kinds, but without any real ambition to consistently produce quality work, restricting myself to the ubiquitous DIY imperatives and the like.
That was the beginning of the journey which I have enjoyed ever since, upgrading my equipment with every birthday and Christmas or windfall that has happened in the interim.
Primarily, I like turning bowls from interesting or repurposed woods whenever I can, some of them with lids and finials and some without, often depending on their size and wood available. I have done some spindle work, but I prefer bowls, boxes, goblets and the like, given the choice.”
“After reacquainting myself on the potential perils of spinning wood at high speeds, I looked for innovative ideas to create and turn on my newest second-hand wood lathe, so I approached Wendy, my wife, who is a keen potter to ask for permission to make some wooden lids with finials to complement her wonderful ceramic stoneware bowls and here are just some of the results.
Our design collaboration has progressed significantly ever since with both ceramic pieces and wooden lid designs made specifically to order as in the cases of lidded garlic pots and oak acorns.
More recently, I received a gift of a ‘bowl saver’ from Wendy which allows me to cut two or potentially three bowls sometimes from one blank which is much more sustainable than removing the inside of the bowl entirely with a sharp chisel and leaving it as wood shavings on the workshop floor.
We are always looking for ways to be more sustainable using felled trees because of dieback repurposed wood from local reclamation sites and gifted wood from landscaping projects or friends.”
"I try to enhance the finished products with a range of quality finishes, some classic like shellac with boiled linseed oil, Danish oil and where necessary a home-made food safe preparation.
To achieve a highly polished piece, I may result to commercial waxes to make the wood ‘pop’ and therefore do the piece justice, any questions I am extremely happy to answer as required.
We hope to continue with both our own work and some new and exciting collaborations, so keep checking this site to see ‘what’s new’ soon!”
